A Note to Students:
Hello
everybody! I am pleased that you will be joining me in learning more
about the theory and practice of building systems commissioning. I have
been involved with commissioning a variety of building systems over the
last 15 years. In the last 10 years, the number of commissioning
projects I have worked on has skyrocketed due in large part to the
increasing popularity of the Leadership in Energy and Environmental
Design (LEED) green building rating system. As LEED continues to grow in
popularity, I expect the business opportunities in the commissioning
field will grow as well.
A little bit about me: I am a mechanical engineer by background, and
found my way into the energy efficiency field back in 1992. About 8
years ago, I went back to school and earned an MBA. I’ve found that
having a combination of technical and business skills has served me well
in my position as a consultant. I was fortunate to have early
involvement with the LEED rating system, going back more than 10 years.
LEED certainly dominates the green building landscape these days, and
its
popularity is growing at a radical rate—for example, did you know that
about half of the total number of buildings that have achieved a LEED
rating did so in 2009?
In terms of personal information, I am married and have four “kids”
(11, 13 17, and 21 years old!). When I’m not pursuing my consulting
work, I am an avid guitar player. I’ve recorded and toured, and having
done so can say with confidence that music is a better hobby than career
for me. If you’re interested, you can check out www.tlguitar.com
to learn a bit more about my music. In terms of other distractions, I
like to run and also I am an enthusiastic beer home brewer (the running
and brewing balance each other out… I like to think so, anyway).
I am looking forward to getting to know all of you and assisting you
with increasing your proficiency in the building commissioning field. I
have a lot of “in the trenches” experience with providing
commissioning services and I hope that this experience will be a
beneficial supplement to the prepared course curriculum.
