A Note From Mr. Stackel:
My interest in sustainable design is tempered with considerations of
budget, context, design issues, and above all, client needs. Some clients
are most concerned about long-term costs such as maintenance or energy
while others are more concerned about water use or having a green roof. I
don't subscribe to any one philosophy because each project is so
different. I do believe strongly that we need to improve our buildings,
particularly in the area of energy use.
Sustainable design and "Green" are the future. Of that I'm
sure. We can't continue to build the way we build and use resources the
way we do. But I'm a realist. I know that the commercial and residential
sectors will only voluntarily follow if it makes sense, costs the same or
maybe a little bit more (not too much), and isn't too difficult. All of
these are achievable, today, right now.
On one level architecture and design are about decisions; how we
approach them, and how we make them. I hope this course will show people
that (1) the decisions we make exhibit an influence beyond our projects
and (2) there are more options available than we might think.
With respect to this course, I want to teach the Green Building Design
and Construction course with as much interaction as possible. There is so
much information out there that students will become as much a source as
the textbook or professor.
Finally, I'm a LEEDTM Accredited Professional so if any students are
planning to take the exam I'll try to help where I can. I'll post practice
information as I find it.
Feel free to send me an email through the ConstructionClass.com website
and I'll see you on the discussion boards.
